THE DRIVETRAIN

WHAT IS THE DRIVETRAIN AND WHAT DOES IT DO?

A car’s drivetrain includes all of the components necessary to transfer the engine’s energy to its wheels in order to make your vehicle move. If you’ve ever talked about rear-wheel drive (RWD) or front-wheel drive (FWD), for example, you’ve talked about a vehicle’s drivetrain.

VOCABULARY BANK

. wheel (rueda) . axle (eje)           . SKID (derrapar)   . gear (engranaje)       . clutch (embrague)

. rear (trasera)  . shaft (barra)    . STEER (conducir, guiar)  . torque (par de fuerzas)      . front (delantera)

 . SPIN (girar)

ACTIVITIES

1.- What are the four different drivetrains?

________________________________________________________________________________________________

2.- What is the key component to those systems? _________________________________________________________

3.- Why is it so important? Explain.

4.- What would happen when you take a turn (tomas una curva) if you had a rigid axle attached to two wheels? Explain.

5.- Complete the definition of “a differential” with the words given. There are two extra words.

axle        between        both           device          rear          speeds           steer

“The differential is a mechanical _________________ placed _________________ the two wheels on an __________________ . It allows __________________ wheels to spin at different ________________ when needed.”

6.- Indicate if the following information belongs to RWD (rear wheel drive), FWD (front wheel drive), 4x4D (four by four drive) or AWD (all wheels drive).

CHARACTERISTCS

RWD

FWD

4x4

AWD

1. The most classic drivetrain.

2. The most modern and automated system.

 3. The engine and transmission are mounted together (transaxle) and placed at the front of the vehicle.

4. The transmission is placed after the engine.

5. The front wheels are just focused on steering.

6. To drive anywhere, no matter how rough the conditions.

7. Differential integrated in the transaxle.

8. The Transfer Case is the heart of this system.

9. It doesn’t use a Transfer Case. Instead, it uses a multi-plate clutch.

10. More focused on practical and efficient driving.

11. It has wheel speed sensors on the four wheels.

12. When you lock (bloquear) the centre differential, the torque is evenly distributed between the front and rear axles.
