WHAT IS THE DRIVETRAIN AND WHAT DOES IT DO?
A car’s drivetrain includes all of the components necessary to transfer the engine’s energy to its wheels in order to make your vehicle move. If you’ve ever talked about rear-wheel drive (RWD) or front-wheel drive (FWD), for example, you’ve talked about a vehicle’s drivetrain.
VOCABULARY BANK
. wheel (rueda) . axle (eje) . SKID (derrapar) . gear (engranaje) . clutch (embrague)
. rear (trasera) . shaft (barra) . STEER (conducir, guiar) . torque (par de fuerzas) . front (delantera)
. SPIN (girar)
ACTIVITIES
1.- What are the four different drivetrains?
________________________________________________________________________________________________
2.- What is the key component to those systems? _________________________________________________________
3.- Why is it so important? Explain.
________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
4.- What would happen when you take a turn (tomas una curva) if you had a rigid axle attached to two wheels? Explain.
________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
5.- Complete the definition of “a differential” with the words given. There are two extra words.
axle between both device rear speeds steer
“The differential is a mechanical _________________ placed _________________ the two wheels on an __________________ . It allows __________________ wheels to spin at different ________________ when needed.”
